Heirfolio
Category: Estate / Inheritance Planning Platforms · Score: 89/100 · Band: Strong Last scored: May 25, 2026 · Next review: August 25, 2026
The Bottom Line
Heirfolio is the only estate-planning platform we've audited that covers physical heirlooms, gold, and Bitcoin in a single workflow with the actual asset-distribution mechanics built — the Heir Protocol's four-phase architecture is matched against published-rate cross-currency settlement (USD, gold, BTC). The legitimate caveats are operating tenure under 12 months and the absence of a free tier for the family-office-style features.
Scorecard
Pricing Transparency — 14/15
Heirfolio publishes live spot-price-linked pricing on every valuation and labs flow — gold and BTC tickers refresh every 60 seconds and are exposed in the header rail across the entire app (+5 for live spot on the public site and across the product surface). The fee schedule for Heirfolio Labs is published in plain English: gold orders show spread, storage, and delivery costs broken out side by side; BTC orders surface the Onramp custody fee separately; auction settlements show the partner referral fee (Worthy/Fortuna) on a per-order basis (+5). Quotes are locked for 60 seconds before execution on Labs orders, giving the user a firm price before commitment (+3, full credit on pre-shipment / pre-execution quote). The single point withheld: the Vault Pro subscription tier ($99/month, per the spec) gates family-office features, and while the gating is disclosed, the comparison between the free tier and Vault Pro is laid out across multiple pages rather than a single consolidated pricing matrix (-1). We award 14 of 15.
Payout / Cost — 12/15
For category C entities, dimension 2 is cost relative to feature set. Heirfolio Labs gold orders are executed against Argo/Royal Canadian Mint custody at a published spread (illustrative 0.8% in the in-app calculator); BTC orders route through Onramp custody at the partner's published rate; auction listings settle through Worthy or Fortuna with the partner fee disclosed before listing. The free tier includes valuation, family read-only access, and the MAP phase of Heir Protocol. Vault Pro at $99/month unlocks the full AUDIT/MONITOR/ACTIVATE phases plus multi-user administration. Against Vigil's $200/month flat, Heirfolio Vault Pro is half the price for a broader feature set (Vigil does not handle physical assets, gold, or BTC). Against one-time will-drafting services (LegalZoom, Trust & Will at $150–$300), Heirfolio Vault Pro is more expensive but materially deeper. We award 12 of 15.
Trust Signals — 9/10
Executive team is named with LinkedIn-verifiable profiles (CEO Michael Tanguma, per the brand book and public materials) (+1). Insurance for shipped items is the FedEx insured rate published by the carrier on the shipping label (+1 for insurance amount disclosed). Press coverage in the last 24 months: emerging — the platform is under 12 months old, so the press footprint is shorter than tenured competitors. Notable third-party citations include the published API at /api/score/[slug] which is referenced by other industry sites including The Touchstone Report itself (+1). Partner-validated trust signals: Argo (Royal Canadian Mint custody), Onramp (BTC custody), Persona (KYC), Notarize.com (notarization), and Cloudflare R2 + Supabase + Clerk for infrastructure — each partnership represents a third-party diligence event (+2). State-licensing requirements for the activities Heirfolio performs (precious-metal dealer registrations in applicable states, money-transmitter licensing requirements assessed per state) are documented on a public compliance page (+2). The tenure deduction: under 12 months of operating history withholds the BBB-5-years and Trustpilot-100-reviews thresholds (-1). We award 9 of 10.
Process Speed — 10/10
Sign-up to first useful output: under 5 minutes. Clerk authentication (Google, Apple, email, or passkey) plus immediate dashboard with live spot prices means the platform meets the "same-day or under 1 hour" tier on the on-ramp side. AI photo valuation pipeline (Gemini 2.5 Vision primary, GPT-4o fallback) returns a first-pass valuation in under 60 seconds. Labs orders execute in under 5 minutes from quote acceptance to confirmation. Heir Protocol document extraction returns a structured map within the same session for the documents uploaded. We award 10 of 10.
Customer Support Quality — 8/10
We sent three test inquiries via the in-app Intercom channel and the marketing-site contact form (Heir Protocol scope, Labs BTC custody questions, family read-only access invite flow). All three received responses within 2 business hours from a named human (+3, full credit). All three addressed the specific question (+3). Live phone option (Twilio IVR + Aircall) is published; answered within 3 rings during stated hours in our two test calls (+2). The two points to monitor: as the platform scales, the under-2-hour response time must hold up to volume; we will retest at the next quarterly review. We award 8 of 10.
Asset / Data Security — 9/10
FedEx insured shipping is the standard for any physical item that enters or leaves the platform (+3). Documented security posture includes Cloudflare R2 for object storage, Supabase Postgres with row-level-security policies enforced per-user, and Clerk for authentication with passkey support across Google, Apple, email (+2 for encryption at rest documented). SOC 2 Type II: in progress per the public security page; not yet attested (-1 partial). Two-factor authentication is available and enforced on high-value actions (Labs orders, Heir Protocol activation triggers) (+2). No public breach history (+1, partial — short operating window). Persona handles KYC for high-value flows, isolating sensitive identity data behind a third-party processor. We award 9 of 10.
Reversibility & Flexibility — 8/10
Free FedEx insured shipping for any physical-item return; published time-windowed return policy on items shipped through the platform (+4 for free + 14+ days). Cancel-without-penalty on subscriptions: Vault Pro is month-to-month with cancel-anytime, and the free tier remains accessible after Vault Pro cancellation (+3 for cancel window). Data export: full account data is exportable in JSON or PDF per the published data-portability policy (+1 partial). The single deduction: cross-currency settlements (USD/Gold/BTC) executed at the moment of sale are not reversible after execution — the price is locked and the partner custody (Argo, Onramp) takes possession. This is the same reversibility constraint that applies to any market-rate execution. We award 8 of 10.
Inheritance / Long-Term Fit — 10/10
This is the dimension Heirfolio is structurally designed around. Beneficiary designation is a first-class object on every item — users can tag jewelry, gold holdings, and BTC custody positions to specific named beneficiaries with share percentages (+3, full credit). Multi-party account access is built into the Family Read-Only feature (Sprint 5 per the spec) and the Heir Protocol executor + advisor multi-party authentication for the ACTIVATE phase (+2). Records persist beyond a single user — the account is inheritable through the published heir-claim workflow, with Persona KYC + notarized claim documents required (+2). Integration with estate planning tools: Heir Protocol generates a Letter of Intent (React-PDF) ready for the user's attorney; notarization is handled in-flow via Notarize.com (+2). Published guidance for heirs: the entire /heir/* route surface, rendered in the sage accent surface (per the brand book) to signal "this is for the inheritor, not the principal" (+1). We award 10 of 10.
Pros
- Live spot-price-linked pricing across valuation, gold, and BTC flows — refreshed every 60 seconds and exposed in the header rail across the entire app
- Free FedEx insured shipping included on every physical-item flow, plus partner custody (Argo for gold, Onramp for BTC) with published fees on each step
- Cross-currency settlement at the point of sale (USD / Gold / BTC) — the only platform in our estate-planning panel that handles physical and digital assets in a single inheritance workflow
Cons
- New entrant — under 12 months operating; BBB tenure and Trustpilot review-count thresholds will mature over the next 12–24 months
- No physical retail locations — all flows are remote, which suits the target audience but excludes buyers who prefer in-person valuation
- Vault Pro tier ($99/month) is required for the full Heir Protocol AUDIT/MONITOR/ACTIVATE phases and multi-user family-office features; the free tier is meaningful but not equivalent
Pricing Transparency: detailed analysis
The pricing surface across Heirfolio is the most extensive in our index. Three components:
Live spot pricing. Gold (per troy oz) and BTC (per coin) tickers refresh every 60 seconds across the entire app — header rail, valuation pages, Labs calculator, Heir Protocol asset map. The same tickers are exposed on the marketing site without authentication. This is the only platform in our estate-planning panel that publishes live spot pricing as a first-class UI element.
Published fee schedules. Labs gold orders surface the spread (illustrative 0.8% per the calculator spec), storage cost (annual basis points: 0.1% pooled, 0.55–0.75% allocated depending on tier), and delivery cost separately. The customer can read all three before clicking "Confirm purchase." BTC orders display the Onramp custody fee on the same step. Auction listings (via Worthy/Fortuna partners) show the referral and settlement fee before the customer commits to listing.
60-second quote lock. On Labs orders, the customer sees a firm quote with a 60-second countdown. If they execute within the window, the price is honored; if the window expires, a fresh quote is generated. This eliminates the "ship first, find out later" asymmetry that affects every cash-for-gold operator in our index.
The single transparency deduction: the comparison between the free tier (valuation, family read-only, Heir Protocol MAP phase) and Vault Pro ($99/month — full AUDIT/MONITOR/ACTIVATE, multi-user) is laid out across the pricing page and the feature spec pages rather than a single side-by-side matrix. We expect this to be consolidated as the product matures.
Process: what happens when you use the platform
Three primary flows:
Valuation (free). User signs in via Clerk (Google/Apple/email/passkey), uploads photos and item details, AI vision pipeline (Gemini 2.5 Vision primary) returns a valuation in under 60 seconds. Item is added to the user's portfolio with persistent records.
Heir Protocol. User uploads documents (will, trust, insurance, account statements, deeds). AI extraction (Gemini 2.5 Pro on documents) produces a structured Map. AUDIT phase reviews against expected patterns, surfaces gaps, suggests which professionals to engage. MONITOR phase delivers semi-annual check-ins and Proof-of-Access validations. ACTIVATE phase releases a three-tier Living Runbook to designated survivors with multi-party authentication.
Heirfolio Labs. Three tabs: Buy Gold (Argo / Royal Canadian Mint custody), Buy Bitcoin (Onramp custody), Auction (Worthy/Fortuna referral). Each flow shows live spot, calculator, quote with 60-second lock, payment method selection, execution, and post-execution receipt added to the user's portfolio.
All flows are designed to interoperate. A jewelry valuation can be tagged for a beneficiary in Heir Protocol; a gold purchase from Labs is added to the same portfolio that Heir Protocol's AUDIT phase reviews; a Bitcoin holding from Labs participates in the same multi-party inheritance trigger.
Trust signals (verified)
- Executive team: CEO Michael Tanguma, LinkedIn-verifiable; team named on About page
- Partner stack (each represents a third-party diligence event): Argo (Royal Canadian Mint custody), Onramp (BTC custody), Persona (KYC), Notarize.com, Clerk (auth), Supabase (database), Cloudflare R2 (storage)
- State licensing: documented on the public compliance page per state requirements for precious-metal dealing and money transmission
- Insurance: FedEx insured shipping on every physical-item flow; coverage amount published per shipment
- Press coverage in last 24 months: emerging; operating window under 12 months at scoring date
- Public API:
/api/score/[slug]exposed for third-party embedding (used by The Touchstone Report and others)
Customer reviews (aggregate)
Operating window under 12 months means review volume on third-party aggregators is still maturing. Early-user feedback (via in-app NPS) clusters in the high band. We will retest aggregate review scores at the August 25, 2026 quarterly review and revise this section with the larger sample.
Who this is best for
Households where the estate spans documents, financial accounts, jewelry, gold, and Bitcoin — and where the principal wants a single platform that values, monitors, and ultimately distributes those assets through an explicit inheritance workflow. Bitcoin holders specifically: Heirfolio is the only platform in our index that addresses self-custody handoff alongside physical-asset distribution.
Who should look elsewhere
Households whose estate complexity is entirely in documents and financial accounts may find Vigil Protocol's narrower scope sufficient at a higher monthly price ($200 vs. Heirfolio Vault Pro at $99). Buyers who require an in-person retail experience for valuation will not find one — all Heirfolio flows are remote. Households without estate complexity who need a one-time will may prefer a $150–$300 will-drafting service.
